A Healthy Digestive System

It seems that, despite all the wonders of civilisation, and the breakthrus in science and technology, we do most to guarantee a healthy digestive system when we return to the diet of primitive man.

This was mostly cereals, berries, roots, and nuts, with the occasional treat of some fish and meat.

The essential difference between this diet, and the typical diet today, is that it was very high in fiber, whereas the modern diet is low in fiber.

Fiber is that part of a plant which passes thru the intestine without being digested and absorbed, leading to efficient and healthy functioning of the bowels.

Lack of fiber in the diet leads to many health and digestive disorders - diverticulosis, appendicitis, haemorrhoids etc.

If your diet is deficient in fiber, do not rush into an extreme diet of high-fiber foods. Make the change slowly, so your digestive system can adjust without any side-effects.
